Mid-Winter Weekend Seminar Recap
On the
heels of our recently concluded Mid-Winter Academic Enhancement
and Bar Preparation Seminar weekend in Arlington, VA,
the general consensus from those in attendance was that the
event was very much a success! CLEO law students from all
over the country descended on the DC Metropolitan area the
weekend of January 7th to network with one another and learn
academic strategies to help them have a successful first year
law school experience (Academic Enhancement) and, for
those on the verge of completing the law school matriculation
process, to begin strategizing on how to successfully tackle
the bar exam (Bar Preparation). More than 300 students
attended the event and it definitely turned out to be one
of the best seminars yet!

Nine
CLEO Law Students Receive Scholarships at
the 2011 Mid-Winter Seminar
As additional
follow-up to our Mid-Winter seminar weekend re-cap, two sets
of scholarships were awarded to nine, deserving CLEO participants
during the Saturday afternoon networking luncheon.
CLEO-Microsoft
Intellectual Property
Law Student Scholarship
In its
second year, the CLEO-Microsoft IP Law Student Scholarship
(CMIPLS) was awarded to the following five 2nd & 3rd-year
CLEO participants:
- Alberto Araiza (2L Fellow - Duke University)
- Angela Freeman (2L Associate - Indiana University-Indianapolis)
- Sonje Hawkins (3L Fellow - Loyola University-Chicago)
- Danielle A. Moore (3L Associate - Howard University)
- Kerene Tayloe (3L Associate - Florida A&M)

The $2,000
CMIPLS scholarship is awarded annually to a select number
of CLEO participants who both excel academically and have
demonstrated a "passion" for pursuing a career in
IP law. The scholarship is generously funded by the Microsoft
Corporation Legal Department. On hand to present the awards
during the luncheon were two of the company's attorneys from
the DC Metropolitan area, Daphne Forbes and Darryl Hobbs (pictured).
William A. Blakey, Esquire - CLEO Diversity Scholarship
In its
inaugural year, the William A. Blakey, Esquire - CLEO Diversity
Scholarship (WAB) was awarded to the following four 3rd- and
4th-year CLEO participants:
- Yaa
Aba Acquaah (3L Associate - Howard University)
- Mujadala Abdul-Majid (4L Associate - Georgetown University)
- Diana Baquero (3L Fellow - Northeastern University)
- Barron Oda (3L Associate - University of Hawaii)
The $2,500
WAB scholarships are intended to help offset the expense incurred
when preparing for and taking the bar examination and are
named in honor of our esteemed Chairman Emeritus, William
"Buddy" Blakey. Buddy was a "social engineer"
in every sense of the word, who devoted his life to serving
the "underserved." Whether he was marshalling through
legislation to benefit historically black colleges and universities
(HBCUs), participating in a mentoring program through his
beloved fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, or brandishing the flags
of his beloved alma maters, Knoxville College and Howard University
School of Law, his greatest passion, without question, was
helping young people further their education.

scholarship recipients, please visit our website, www.cleodivercitynetwork.org.

feelings toward CLEO, Cuong stated the following:
"CLEO has been a fantastic part of my legal education
and experience! Because of CLEO, I have met some of the most
amazing lawyers and law students around the country. It is such
a privileged to part of CLEO and it is a wonderful and supportive
family. The CLEO experience helped me to get where I am professionally
and because of that, I love CLEO!"
"I strongly recommend to all of the current and future
CLEO participants that they take advantage of everything that
CLEO has to offer. It is a wonderful program and has been changing
lives for the better for more than four decades."
We are very proud to call Cuong one of our own and wish him
well with all of his future endeavors!
