Summer 2010 CLEO Event Recap
The CLEO
staff was very busy as usual this summer as we hosted several
annual events around the country. The
Six-Week Summer Institutes were held at Florida International
University School of Law and University of Missouri-Columbia
School of Law.
This year's Attitude
is Essential and Achieving
Success in the Application Process pre-law weekend seminars
were held in Atlanta and Los Angeles.

Our three
Sophomore
Summer Institutes took place at Thomas M. Cooley School
of Law, Northern Illinois University College of Law, and University
of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Law. In early June,
we also hosted our annual Mid-Summer
Professional Development Seminar and Career Fair in Chicago.
The Mid-Summer event, for rising 2L's and 3Ls, allows students
to network, learn essential career-related strategies/skills,
and interact with attorneys.

Lastly, this year marked the
forming of a new partnership between CLEO and the Just the
Beginning Institute Foundation to introduce the law to high
school students at summer legal institutes held in various
cities around the country. Special thanks to all of our alums,
participants and law student volunteers for making all of
the events so successful!

Well, what are you waiting for??? Join the CMN today!
The CLEO
Mentoring Network (CMN) is only a few attorneys away
from attaining the "100 mentor" threshold we have actively
been pursuing since first establishing the program. We can't
begin to tell you how often we're asked by prospective protégés,
"When am I going to be paired up with a mentor?" At
this point, all we can continue to say is that we are doing
everything we can to reach out to professional members of
the legal community to try and get them to register as mentors.
Thus, if you are willing to help "lighten our load" by one,
please click on the link above to learn more about the network
and sign up as a participant. Thanks!!!

| Let's stay in touch!
If you're
one of those CLEO alums (or know of one) that says they never
receive any correspondence from the organization, we've got
an easy and direct way for you to provide us with your updated
contact information. Just click www.cleoadmin.com/update.cfm and update the form.
Additionally, if you have any exciting news you would like
to share with the CLEO family please provide it in the appropriate
space. Many special thanks to those family members who have
already provided us with their updated contact information!

Meet
a CLEO…Fellow: Gary K. Heald, Jr.
| CLEO
Fellow, Gary Heald, Jr., is a rising 3L Fellow at
The University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Just
recently, Gary learned that he is the recipient of a litany
of prestigious honors from the school for the upcoming
academic year, including being named as one of the editors
for the 2010-2011 Tax Review Journal; third-year |
 |
class representative for the Student Bar Association; serving as a presiding judge over the 1Ls Appellate Oral Arguments; and, the 2010 Daniel B. Dixon Scholarship awardee, which is given annually to a Pittsburgh law students who has demonstrated an interest in real estate law, academic excellence and financial need. After graduation, Gary has plans to obtain his LL.M. in Federal Income Taxation and work as either a judicial clerk or for a law practice that services clients in a tax and/or litigation capacity.
In large part, thanks to CLEO, Gary feels as though "the sky's the limit," when it comes to what he can accomplish as he prepares to embark upon his legal career. Since attending the 2008 Six-Week Summer Institute at Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, CA, Gary considers himself "lucky enough to have developed and maintained a professional network that's been like family." In his view, "CLEO Fellows, Associates, Affiliates, alumni and staff are an 'oasis' of responsible leaders" that can be relied upon to help "lift each other up" during good times and not so good times. Please join us as we salute Gary for all of his wonderful accolades and wishing him nothing but the best as he enters his final year of law school!

CLEO in the Community
We would
like to begin highlighting some of the great things former
and current CLEOs are doing in their respective communities
to demonstrate the importance of giving back. If you are involved
in something in your community that you would like to share
with the entire CLEO family, or, if you are looking for volunteer
assistance for an existing project or to get one started,
please shoot us the details at cleo@abanet.org.
Thanks!

| Featured Partner Event: National Latina/o Law Student Association Annual Conference
On October 1 and 2, the National Latina/o Law Student Association (NLLSA) will host its annual conference at the Yale Law School in New Haven, CT. NLLSA is an organization designed to serve as a conduit for Latino/a law students throughout the country and to empower the larger Latino community. Founded in 1996, NLLSA's mission of social, ethnic, and gender equality, as well as diversity in the legal profession, has strongly resonated with students and professionals from around the country. As a testament to their growing reach and influence, the organization now boasts a local chapter in nearly every ABA-accredited law school.
As in years past, this weekend-long conference will bring
together hundreds of diverse law student leaders from schools
such as Berkeley, Columbia, Cornell, Texas, UCLA, Yale, and
many others. The Conference will also attract professors,
practitioners, judges, and prominent community leaders from
all regions of the country. The Conference theme, "Ahora"
(Now), highlights the important work and accomplishments
that NLLSA predecessors help bring about. The theme also acknowledges
that Latina/o law students and attorneys must confront the
challenges our communities face if the gains that have been
made to date are to be sustained. With this in mind, the topics
presented at this year's conference will primarily focus on
immigration reform, education reform, workers' rights, voting
rights, and access to healthcare, to name but a few.
For more information about the conference, please visit: http://www.law.yale.edu/news/llsaconference.htm
